Frequently Asked Questions - Barunga Festival 2011

 If you don't find the answer to your question below, please email us at barunga.festival@jawoyn.org and we'll be happy to reply to you.  As Barunga community is remote, we understand that you might have specific questions and we want to make sure that you enjoy a memorable experience at the Barunga Festival.

Remember, some warm clothing is recommended for night time as it can get quite cool during this time of the year.  

HOW DO I GET THERE?

DRIVING: Take the Stuart Highway south of Katherine until Central Arnhem Highway (50km).  Turn left at Central Arnhem Highway towards Beswick, continue for 30km and turn right at Barunga which will be well signposted.  The road is sealed and easily accessible by 2 wheel drive.

BUS SERVICES: The following bus services will depart from Nitmiluk Tours, 2/27 Katherine Terrace, Katherine

 Pre booking essential - To book call 1300 146 743
Nitmiluk Tours will also be Pre Selling Festival tickets

Friday 10 June - regular community service

6.30am departs Katherine -  7.40am arrives Barunga                 8.45am departs Barunga - 9.55am arrives Katherine

3.30pm departs Katherine- 4.45pm arrives Barunga                   5.30pm departs Barunga - 7.00pm arrives Katherine

RATES FOR FRIDAY SERVICES: ADULT $20 return and $11 one way       CHILD $10 return and $5.50 one way

 Saturday 11 June - Special Barunga Festival Bus

10.00am departs Katherine (Jawoyn Assoc minibus) - arrives Barunga approx 11 am

5.00pm departs Katherine (Nitmiluk Tours) - arrives Barunga 6.30pm

RATES FOR SATURDAY BUSES $10 return and $7 one way

WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE AT BARUNGA?

  • Basic shower facilities
  • General Store
  • Food stalls (from coffee to stews and steak sandwiches)
  • Credit card facilities (available for merchandise and entrance fees.  Transactions incur a surcharge and no cash out available)
  • Please note there are no cash outlets or fuel available in Barunga so fill up in Katherine     

WILL I GET MOBILE RECEPTION?

Telstra Next G has good coverage in Barunga

 WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

 If you are camping you will need to bring all your own gear with you including cooking equipment

Best to bring your own drinking water however there will be bottled water available for sale

Warm Clothing.  The nights can be quite cool at this time of year but the days are generally warm

No fuel is available at Barunga so make sure you fill up in Katherine

Cash (no cash available at Barunga.  Credit card facilities are available for merchandise and entrance fee but transactions incur a surcharge and no cash withdrawals available)

Camera - there will be plenty of opportunities for great photos for your personal use but please be aware of cultural sensitivity

CAN I BRING MY OWN ALCOHOL OR BUY SOME AT BARUNGA?

NO.  The Barunga Festival is a drug and alcohol free event.

CAN I BRING THE CHILDREN?

Absolutely! Children are very welcome on the community and there will be plenty of exciting experiences for them.  Friday night there will be a disco and the" Indigenous Hip Hop Projects" will be running workshops for aspiring Hip Hoppers.

CAN I COME AND GO OR JUST COME FOR THE SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERT?

YES. You willl be issued with a wrist band when you purchase your entry so if you wish to return to Katherine each night that is no problem.   There will be buses leaving Katherine on Saturday morning and afternoon and returning when the main concert finishes around midnight.   There are no buses on Sunday.

WHAT MOVIES WILL BE SHOWING ON SUNDAY NIGHT?

From 7pm we will be screening:

GENERATION ONE: An informative documentary about the Intervention and its effects on the Northern Territory

LUCKY MILES: A bittersweet comedy reinventing a classic Aussie story by the first time feature director, Michael James Rowland

CAN WE TAKE A HELICOPTER FLIGHT?

Yes, this year for the first time Helicopter scenic flights will be available for the duration of the festival through Nitmiluk Tours.

CAN WE BUY ARTWORK?

Yes.  This is a unique opportunity to meet and talk with local artists and artists from surrounding communities and buy their work direct.
