ART - WeavingBasket weaving is a very unique event at the Barunga Festival. Visitors a invited to participate in an interactive workshop with elders from across the region.Basket weaving is a very acient tradition of the Jawoyn women and is passed down from grandmother and mother to daughter.Baskets are used to carry water,bush tucker and bush medicines back to camp. They have become very popular as collectable artifacts and are exhibited in some of Australias most prominent art galleries. To weave one basket can take many days. First,you need to collect Pandanus and bush dyes. Bush dyes come from tree roots and In the colours of red and yellow. The pandanus and bush colours are boiled together. After this the pandanus are hung to dry. Once the pandanus is dried you can begin to weave your basket.
